Cum Laude is a Latin word that means “with honor” or “with praise”. It is the most common Latin honor awarded to students for their academic achievement. And the requirements for the honor will depend on the school. It is a mark of distinction that students can use in their resume about their success in their higher education.

We have three commonly awarded Latin honor designations recognized in the United States are

Cum Laude GPA

Generally, cum laude GPA is awarded to the top 25 -35% of the students in the class who had a GPA of 3.5 to 3.7. Cum laude honors is a Latin honor that means “with honor”.

Magna Cum Laude GPA

Magna Cum Laude GPA is nothing but “with great honor” and it is a higher distinction them cum laude. This magna cum laude will be awarded to the top 10-15% of their class who had earned a GPA of 3.8 -3.9. For, some schools this is the second highest but for some of them, this is the highest.

Summa Cum Laude GPA

Summa Cum Laude GPA means “ With the highest honor” that was given to the top 1-5% of students who got 4.0+ in the class.
